The new bridge across Patterson Avenue on the east side of Winston-Salem, NC, is taking shape right alongside the deteriorating bridge it will replace. That’s the problem: The close proximity of one bridge to the other has handicapped the contractor on the project. “It’s very difficult,” said David Rowe, president of Smith-Rowe Inc. “We’ve had to put this big steel together without having enough room to do it.” The bridge will carry traffic on Oak Summit Road, which at that point rides the summit of a hill as it passes over Patterson Road.  Click for more...

Only 2 mi. of Interstate 93 south of Manchester, NH, have been directly affected by the rehabilitation of four different bridges along the highway. Once the work is finished, though, traffic flow for miles up and down the highway will be greatly improved. Volvo Construction Plans to Set Up Manufacturing Facility in Shanghai →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Volvo Construction Equipment S.A. recently said it has decided to set up a wholly owned unit and a facility for manufacturing construction equipment in Shanghai . The company, which is part of the Volvo Group, said investment in the facility totals around $15 million. Trimble recently announced that it has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Army to provide grade control and laser leveling systems for its heavy construction equipment. The contract is valued at approximately $1.7 million. Under the contract, Trimble will supply grade control systems for the Army’s new hydraulic excavators called the HYEX. Crews Work on First Section of WV 9 Replacement Job →

Crews in West Virginia are currently working on the first section of a $110-million project that will replace WV 9 with a new four-lane highway that will run from Charles Town to the Virginia line. The current project runs from U.S. 340 and intersects with Cattail Road, a distance of approximately 1.25 mi. (2 km). The contract includes two separate overpass bridges for 340 and all on/off ramps.
