Volvo Construction Plans to Set Up Manufacturing Facility in Shanghai →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Volvo Construction Equipment S.A. recently said it has decided to set up a wholly owned unit and a facility for manufacturing construction equipment in Shanghai . The company, which is part of the Volvo Group, said investment in the facility totals around $15 million. Trimble recently announced that it has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Army to provide grade control and laser leveling systems for its heavy construction equipment. The contract is valued at approximately $1.7 million. Under the contract, Trimble will supply grade control systems for the Army’s new hydraulic excavators called the HYEX. Crews Work on First Section of WV 9 Replacement Job →

Crews in West Virginia are currently working on the first section of a $110-million project that will replace WV 9 with a new four-lane highway that will run from Charles Town to the Virginia line. The current project runs from U.S. 340 and intersects with Cattail Road, a distance of approximately 1.25 mi. (2 km). The contract includes two separate overpass bridges for 340 and all on/off ramps. Fast-Track Project Speeds Trolleys Back to Scranton, PA →

The $1.1-million job just completed on Stafford Avenue in Scranton, PA, will not only replace a bridge that was demolished more than a decade ago — thereby restoring the Laurel Line rail link from Scranton to Montage, PA — but also it was a project that was designed and built very quickly. In fact, according to Dave Krisanda, community relations coordinator of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 4, the project “went from the conceptual stage to the final design and project delivery in only four months.” The Project’s History Pat McCabe, PennDOT senior project construction manager, described the background to this unusual undertaking. “In 1988, a wooden deck highway bridge over a then abandoned railway line was removed and backfilled to avoid the cost of a new bridge,” he began.  Click for more...

A tanker loaded with petroleum collided with another vehicle, causing the truck to burst into flames and cause massive damage. “It burned underneath the bridge and melted the girders to the point where they had a 10-ft. sag. It was a very dangerous situation, because the whole thing could have fallen at any time,” explained Tim Colvert, the chief bridge inspector of the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). “When I arrived on the scene, it was obvious there was no repairing the bridge, so we started moving in equipment in an effort to clear out all the debris.  Click for more...
