The project is particularly significant because it is the first major expansion at the facility since it opened during the Depression in 1933. The annex is the first phase of a multi-year project that includes phased renovation and historic restoration of the main library building, expected to begin in June 2005. For the nearly 80,000 motorists speeding across the I35E Bridge over the Mississippi River as they head into or out of St. Paul, MN, the only signs of construction activity are a couple of cranes towering slightly above the bridge deck. However, below the deck, construction crews, during the last year, have constructed five new bridge piers and hoisted into place the first three out of five lines of steel girders to carry the northbound lanes of a completely new bridge. Southwest Virginia Memorial Bridge →

In April 2001, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) began work to replace the 52-year-old Southwest Virginia Memorial Bridge over the New River and the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks. The bridge, which is located on Route 11 and links Radford and Fairlawn in Pulaski County, is a single structure with two lanes for northbound traffic and two lanes for southbound traffic. When completed in fall 2004, the new bridge will have two structures, each with three lanes, and both spans will have sidewalks and bike lanes. Replacing the Southwest Virginia Memorial Bridge first involves constructing a new southbound bridge, then demolishing the existing bridge and, finally, building a new northbound bridge.  Click for more...

Tramac V55 Takes Down Cliff for WV Road Project →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Wayne Concrete, of Barboursville, WV, has been hammering hard to remove a 700 ft. (213 m) long, 100 ft. (30 m) high rock cliff along State Route 10 in Logan county. According to Bud Daniels, president of Wayne Concrete, this has been a problem spot for the past 80 years — at most, the width of the road at this dangerous point is a lane and a half. When the rock cliff is removed, the Department of Transportation will begin widening the road to two full lanes and a “bench” to receive fallen rocks. Cat Shear Force Speeds Demolition at Steel Foundry →

From Construction Equipment Guide... The demolition crew of R. St-Pierre Excavation required only seven weeks to take down a 250,00-sq.-ft. (23,225 sq m) structure — the Canadian Steel Wheel foundry in Montreal, Quebec. In that same span, crews cut up 4,500 tons (4,050 t) of scrap steel and trucked it 50 mi. (80 km) to operating foundries where the scrap was reborn as new structural steel H-beams. Managed by the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority, the bayfront building will serve as a hub for passengers of Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority buses and eventually Greyhound buses. In addition, the complex will feature services for taxicabs, cruise boats, ferryboats and even bicycles.
