Tramac V55 Takes Down Cliff for WV Road Project →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Wayne Concrete, of Barboursville, WV, has been hammering hard to remove a 700 ft. (213 m) long, 100 ft. (30 m) high rock cliff along State Route 10 in Logan county. According to Bud Daniels, president of Wayne Concrete, this has been a problem spot for the past 80 years — at most, the width of the road at this dangerous point is a lane and a half. When the rock cliff is removed, the Department of Transportation will begin widening the road to two full lanes and a “bench” to receive fallen rocks. From Construction Equipment Guide... The demolition crew of R. St-Pierre Excavation required only seven weeks to take down a 250,00-sq.-ft. (23,225 sq m) structure — the Canadian Steel Wheel foundry in Montreal, Quebec. In that same span, crews cut up 4,500 tons (4,050 t) of scrap steel and trucked it 50 mi. (80 km) to operating foundries where the scrap was reborn as new structural steel H-beams. The Cat 320C excavator is expected to work in a wide range of construction projects from now through the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Caterpillar’s authorized dealer in Beijing, WesTrac China, will provide service support to keep the excavator in peak working condition throughout construction. Caterpillar Vice President Stu Levenick presented the historic excavator to the Deputy Secretary General of The People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, Yan Zhongqui. Eastern Bridge Reconstructs First Broad River Span →

From Construction Equipment Guide... First Broad River Bridge, located one-tenth mi. (.16 km) north of SR1521 on NC Highway 10 between Polkville and Caser, NC, was recently rebuilt. The old two-lane bridge, which was built in 1939, was constructed of a concrete deck on I beams — five beams per span. According to Tim Elliott, acting transportation supervisor of Cleveland and Gaston counties, NC, deterioration of concrete and expansion joints, along with an increase in both car and truck traffic led to the decision to replace the bridge. “By today’s standard, the old bridge was too narrow,” Elliott said.  Click for more...
