From Construction Equipment Guide... Traveling west toward Downingtown, on the Route 30 Bypass, in southern Chester County, PA, a monster is visible in the distance. The monster towering over the surrounding landscape is a Caterpillar 375L hydraulic excavator. The machine sits atop a benched pile of dirt, taking scoop after scoop and loading a series of Cat 730 articulated trucks. The boom and stick of the machine seem like the arm of a giant, each move affecting the building site. The Cat 375L is being used by B&J Excavating, a Downingtown-based site contractor who is working on the building pad and parking lots of a Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse. Click for more...

Tom Elmore, president of Eutaw Construction, looked out at the site before him and saw machines sitting idle. The site was completely underwater. An Anchorage contractor pulled the piece of heavy equipment from near Sevena Lake on New Year’s Eve at a cost of $29,500. Steve Thomas, who owns Thomas Development Inc., said the excavator was delivered to the Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) and Public Facilities’ maintenance yard in Soldotna. A major reconstruction is currently under way on Interstate 95 at Bridgeport, CT. Known as the I-95 Bridgeport Corridor, the project has an estimated total cost of $422.7 million. Notice to proceed was given on Aug. 29, 1996, and the final completion is set for June 30, 2005. According to Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT), the program consists of the modification of the I-95 roadway cross section and the realignment of I-95 as required in Bridgeport. Contractors are expected to complete the majority of two major interchange reconstruction contracts for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) later this month. Snell Construction won the $16.5-million contract covering the demolition and replacement of bridges and interchanges at Almon Road and Georgia state Roads 11 and 12 in Newton and Walton counties. In Lowndes County, GA, Department of Transportation (GDOT) crews are in the final stages of construction on Franks Creek Road Bridge, which was damaged when a driver knocked out a portion of it with a piece of heavy equipment. “One of our contractors, a subcontractor of a prime on the [bridge] project, picked up a large hydraulic excavator on the lowboy.
