Fletcher Bridge Comes Down After 40 Years of Shaky Traffic →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Demolition of the U.S. 25 bridge crossing I-26 near Fletcher, NC, began last month. The 40-year-old, 69 ft. (21 m) wide, five-lane bridge will be replaced with a new 93 ft. (28.3m), 7 in. (17.7 cm) bridge with two through lanes and a turning lane in each direction. There also will be 5.5 ft. From Construction Equipment Guide... A major reconstruction of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is currently under way in Somerset, PA. The $94.3-million project, funded entirely by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, involves the total reconstruction of a 13-mi. (20.9 km) long section of the original turnpike built in 1940. From Construction Equipment Guide... Traveling west toward Downingtown, on the Route 30 Bypass, in southern Chester County, PA, a monster is visible in the distance. The monster towering over the surrounding landscape is a Caterpillar 375L hydraulic excavator. The machine sits atop a benched pile of dirt, taking scoop after scoop and loading a series of Cat 730 articulated trucks. The boom and stick of the machine seem like the arm of a giant, each move affecting the building site. The Cat 375L is being used by B&J Excavating, a Downingtown-based site contractor who is working on the building pad and parking lots of a Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse.  Click for more...

Tom Elmore, president of Eutaw Construction, looked out at the site before him and saw machines sitting idle. The site was completely underwater. An Anchorage contractor pulled the piece of heavy equipment from near Sevena Lake on New Year’s Eve at a cost of $29,500. Steve Thomas, who owns Thomas Development Inc., said the excavator was delivered to the Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) and Public Facilities’ maintenance yard in Soldotna.  Click for more...

A major reconstruction is currently under way on Interstate 95 at Bridgeport, CT. Known as the I-95 Bridgeport Corridor, the project has an estimated total cost of $422.7 million. Notice to proceed was given on Aug. 29, 1996, and the final completion is set for June 30, 2005. Contractors are expected to complete the majority of two major interchange reconstruction contracts for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) later this month. GDOT let the contracts in 2001. Rogers Bridge Company, Shepherd Construction and E.R.
