For the new century, the newest line of Kubota compact excavators take job-site performance to new levels. These all-new and updated Kubotas excel in restricted work environments where space and ground condition challenges can often mean time and money for contractors, demolition firms, rental operations and others. For the 2000 model year, Kubota brings five compact excavators to market, each part of the KX-2 array. The combination of independent boom swing and 360-degree cab rotation make the KX-2 line-up a top choice for those concerned with optimum performance regardless of terrain, weather or space restrictions. Central to each of the KX excavators is Kubota’s hydraulic pilot controls. This system delivers joystick activated implement speed that directly matches the operator’s “touch” expectations. The result is precision operation without wasted operator time learning to adjust to the system’s characteristics. The Kubota layout enables the operator to select either ISO or SAE control patterns. This is an important feature for rental companies as the control system meets any operator’s familiarity needs. Each KX-2 model can perform swing, dozer, boom, arm or bucket functions without altering travel speed or direction. Lifting and craning can be done at the same time while moving forward or back. This means the Kubota excavator is able to combine drive functions with multiple-circuit operations giving the operator a far wider latitude when encountering challenging tasks or difficult work conditions. This ability is further enhanced by Kubota’s large capacity, variable displacement hydraulic pumps, which are featured on the KX91-2 and larger models. These automatically adjust to varying load conditions and mean faster operating speed with light loads, while speed is converted to power with heavier tasks. This performance-matched system relies on Kubota’s high engine torque rise which prevents engine stall with heavy loads and the automatic control of pump slow, rates and pressure. Each KX-2 model features two-speed travel enabled by oil flow from two oversized hydraulic pumps feeding the drive motors, and providing a faster high speed and more powerful low-range operations. Once in place, the KX excavators put to use Kubota’s foot-lever controlled boom swing. This system lets the operator swing the boom and move the cab simultaneously. It should be noted that the Kubota boom swings to the left which facilitates an unobstructed view of the bucket during trenching and other operations. Kubota’s innovative rubber tracks reduce vibration during traveling. The track frames on KX61-2 and larger models are designed with a 30-degree upper angle to slough-off dirt and debris away from the track system itself, adding to longer track life and reducing the likelihood of track stall. The hydraulic tank is positioned outside of the operator platform with the fuel tank located next to it. This means the fuel tank acts as a cooling barrier between warmer hydraulic fluids and the operator. For maintenance, the KX’s inspection points are readily accessible in front of the fuel tank — near frequently monitored water separator, battery, fuel tank drain and fuel filter devices. A double-element fuel filter is located in the engine compartment and is standard on all KX excavators. Fluids, filters, valves and grease points are easily accessed, which will translate to more frequent inspection and service — hence longer operating life. Operator safety and comfort are top-most when Kubota designs any equipment. This philosophy is perhaps more readily apparent when viewing the excavator line from the operator’s perspective. The walk-through four post canopy design permits access from either side of the machine. For the 2000MY, the seat has been redesigned to be wider and is adjustable front-to-rear and can accommodate the operator’s arm length between arm rest and pilot controls. The instruments are now located to the operator’s right and include a full range of gauges and tachometer. Cab models are equipped with a heater and window defogger, windshield washer and wiper, and interior lighting. Windows open and the doors may also be latched open for cross-flow ventilation. Important for rental operators is Kubota’s safety lock feature that prevents unintentional engagement of the pilot controls. Kubota equipment is recognized world wide for impressive performance and good looks. The excavator line is no exception and uses a design approach mandated by expected work conditions. The upper structure design calls for the house or cab width to be narrower than the track width. If the track fits, so will the house. Large counterweights and the positioning of fuel and hydraulic tanks add to overall stability with a new contoured hood that also acts as side protector and bumper. Implements and optional equipment attach easily and a complete range of buckets is available. The KX-2 series is also designed to support equipment requiring auxiliary hydraulic ports, which are located on the arm for quick attachment. Excavators may be ordered with either standard or optional long arms. The Kubota KX-2 series includes: KX41-2, KX61-2, KX91-2, KX121-2, KX161-2 models. They are joined this year by Kubota’s all-new K008 mini-excavator which features a hydraulically-adjustable track frame, adjustable width dozer blade, standard rubber track, three-cylinder Kubota diesel engine, 140-degree boom swing and 36-centimeter (14 in.) standard bucket.
