The direct result of ongoing collaboration between excavator customers and Deere engineers, John Deere has launched three new G-Series excavators featuring IT4-certified engines, more power and cab improvements to increase visibility. The new series introduction includes the 250G, 290G and 350G, ranging from 191 to 299 net hp (142 to 223 kW). Each product’s IT4-certified engine allows customers to meet the latest local emissions regulations and bid specifications without sacrificing power or performance, according to the manufacturer. An Oregon excavating contractor has found that a 2D guidance system from Leica Geosystems improved the productivity of an excavator by 30 percent when cutting slopes to a precise grade. About a year ago, Pihl Inc., a grading and excavation contractor based in Banks, Ore., bought the PowerDigger Plus guidance system from Leica Geosystems and fitted it onto a Kobelco 235 excavator. The VDS compensates for height differences on uneven terrain and quickly sets the operator in an upright position, greatly increasing productivity, according the manufacturer. This system enables operators to tilt the cab and boom of the excavator by up to 15-degrees with the push of a button, allowing the operator to compensate for slopes up to 27 percent. Caterpillar Inc. announced plans June 17 to significantly increase its manufacturing capabilities and capacity for hydraulic excavators that will be produced at a facility now under construction in Victoria, Texas. In August of 2010, Caterpillar announced that it would build the excavator plant in Victoria, investing about $130 million to open the 850,000 sq. ft. operation.
