Feeling the Heat: Crews Race to Repair Span in 18 Days →

Early in the morning of July 1, a fire caused by a tanker truck carrying ethanol exploded under a bridge on Interstate 70 on the outerbelt going around Columbus, Ohio. This required emergency work to be done to repair the bridge and adjacent ramp — a $1.186 million Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) contract that went to Shelly & Sands Inc. To the relief of local residents and interstate travelers, a two-year road improvement project sprawling the length and width of a small southern Minnesota town recently ended. The work featured bridge demolition and construction along with nearly 20 mi. (32 km) of road improvements on a system of interstate, state and county highways. He took a 90-day leave of absence from his job in the finance sector to help end the family’s 30-year run in the underground pipeline contracting business. California General Contractor Avoids Puncturing Aquifer →

(JCGI) headquartered in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., recently installed four large underground storage tanks as part of the construction of a new gas station in Lynnwood, Wash. The excavation for the tank-set, though rather large — about 65 sq. ft. (6 sq. m) — was only 16 ft. (4.87 m) deep. Route 400 Bridge Replacement Under Way →

The $10,075,436 replacement of the two bridges at Route 400 over Route 240 (Harlem Road) will be completed next year when Nichols, Long & Moore Construction replaces the two parallel bridges over two weekends. The work also includes the mill and overlay (13 lane mi.) with ADA compliance work on Route 240 from Orchard Park Road to Route 400 in the town of West Seneca in Erie County. The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) project, which has some federal funding, is associated with the Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council.  Click for more...

FDOT I-275 Project Aims to Improve Traffic Flow →

Construction work continues in downtown Tampa, as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) rebuilds and widens Interstate 275 from east of State Road 60 to the Hillsborough River. The project will reconstruct all the southbound interstate in the area, as well as northbound I-275 from east of State Road 60 to Himes Avenue. “This work is needed to help improve regional and local traffic movement by adding capacity, improving safety and reducing commuting times,” said John McShaffrey, FDOT District 7 spokesman.  Click for more...


Vital Kingshighway Viaduct Job Begins With Demo Work →

The city of St. Louis closed the Kingshighway bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks (between Southwest/Vandeventer and Shaw Boulevard) and Daggett Avenue on July 6 so that the 75-year-old bridge can be torn down and replaced — an $18 million project that was awarded to Kozeny-Wagner Inc. The project, including construction, land acquisition and design, is the result of funding from the Federal Highway Administration (80 percent) and Union Pacific Railroad (20 percent).  Click for more...
