On July 1, 2009, Bartow County civic leaders assembled to break ground on the new Clarence Brown Conference Center in Cartersville, Ga. Currently, the $20-million, LEED Certified facility is approximately 60 percent finished and is on track for an August 2010 completion date. Hogan Construction Group LLC, Norcross, Ga., is the general contractor on the project. Bartow County and each of its municipalities are jointly funding the conference center through special purpose local option sales tax proceeds, which also is funding a number of other local projects. A railroad bridge replacement project is nearing an early completion date in the city of Waynesboro, Va., under the direction of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The contract of $9,862,043 was awarded to Abernathy Construction, Glen Allen, Va. The project is headed by David Abernathy, superintendent, and Jeffrey Abernathy. According to Sandy Myers, public relations manager of VDOT’s Staunton District, Abernathy redesigned the railroad bridge, saving the organization $400,000. Click for more...

Thompson Tractor Company Inc. recently held a reception at the Bay Point Marriott, Panama City, Fla., in recognition of the retirement of Steve Parish and his 56 years of dedicated service to Caterpillar products. In his speech applauding Parish’s contributions to the company, Thompson’s Mike Thompson pointed out that back in 1953 when Parish started working for Caterpillar, a Ford car sold for $1,537, gas was 22 cents a gallon, postage stamps were three cents, Chevrolet rolled out the first Corvette, the state of New York adopted the first traffic lights with three colors, and the unemployment rate was just 2.9 percent.
