Texas’ Lake Tucker, the city of Strawn’s domestic water supply is undergoing several drastic changes to increase its current water capacity. The lake’s dam and spillway are being modified to increase the current level of the 30-acre lake by 5 ft. The dam, in particular, presented the contractor, M. A. Vinson Construction Company Inc. of Fort Worth, TX, with the need for some specialized equipment. The dam, nearly 80 ft. in height, needed a new section of rip-rap placed some 45 ft. below the top of the dam at a very severe angle. M.A. Vinson Construction looked to Corky Underwood and RECS to supply the specialized equipment needed to complete the job. A new JCB JS260LR tracked excavator, recently purchased from Crescent Machinery Company of Fort Worth, TX, was placed into service. “The extended reach of the machine, approximately 55 ft., enabled the necessary grading and placement of the new section of rip-rap to be completed with ease,” said Glenn Maddux, job superintendent for M. A. Vinson. The spillway must also be reconfigured with a series of weirs to enable the lake to be raised the necessary 5 ft. The project is slated for completion by the end of September. This story also appears on Construction Equipment Guide.
