The new Caterpillar 924Gz wheel loader offers significant improvements compared to the 924F model it replaces. The G-series machine presents improved features, better performance and easier service. The 924Gz features a conventional Z-Bar linkage, very similar to the 924F, for customers who prefer a traditional linkage. The primary applications for the 924Gz are: • truck loading from a stockpile or hard bank; • hopper charging; • site preparation; • loaded carry; and • trenching support (backfilling, material handling). For more versatility, the 924G with VersaLink loader linkage is also available. The 924G combines the versatility of an integrated tool carrier with the strong performance characteristics of a dedicated wheel loader. It can be configured with a hydraulic quick coupler and a wide variety of work tools, or with pin-on attachments like a bucket or forks. Loader Hydraulics The 924Gz features a new and improved pilot-controlled loader hydraulic system with a low-effort, joystick control. A hydraulic pump, separate from the steering pump, drives the loadsensing system. Both the implement hydraulic system and the steering system get the power they need on demand, making more power available for rimpull, breakout and lifting. Refinements to the implement controls result in significant improvements in productivity. First, velocity modulation — the farther the operator moves the implement lever, the faster the function — results in greater control of implement functions without cylinder voiding. Secondly, simultaneous lift and tilt functions — means the operator can lift and rack-back at the same time or return to dig as the lift arms are lowered. This small savings in time per cycle adds up to a significant improvement in loader productivity over a work shift. Power Train The Caterpillar 3056T turbocharged, six-cylinder, diesel engine with 85 kilowatts (114 hp) powers the 924Gz. It provides an eight percent increase in power compared to the Cat 3114T used in the former model. The 3056T meets all known current worldwide engine emission standards. The engine compartment of the 924Gz is completely enclosed. This system helps lower overall noise levels and also helps keep the engine much cleaner. The new cooling system on the 924Gz has a separate air intake system. A hydraulically-driven suction fan brings cooler ambient air into the radiator core for better overall performance. An improved countershaft transmission with four forward speeds, three reverse speeds and autoshift standard is used in the 924Gz. This new transmission provides optimal performance converter match and has a modified gear ratio for improved fourth gear runout speed. Maximum runout speed (fourth gear) on this machine will approach 40 kilometers per hour (25 miles per hour). An optional remote forward/neutral/reverse switch is available for machines equipped with the joystick implement control to give the operator control of F/N/R functions from the lift control lever. This provides greater control of the transmission since the operator’s hand does not need to move from the steering wheel to the transmission lever. The result is quicker, smoother operation with less operator fatigue. Machine Frames The 924Gz engine end frame has a welded-in trunnion support which helps stabilize the axle mount bolted joint. The hitch area of the engine end frame includes structural tubing and fabricated I-beam plate assemblies that resist deflection when the rear of the machine comes off the ground. The front frame structures of the 924Gz use thick upper and lower hitch plates to transfer loads across to the engine end frame. The front frame takes advantage of a new steering cylinder placement which applies loads associated with steering to the strongest part of the fabrication — the rigid hitch and ROPS mount. G-Series Operator Station The G-series cab is a notable improvement over the F-series cab. Features include: • improved access and egress; • enhanced visibility with over 30 percent more glass; • more interior room; • greater personal storage space; and • lower interior sound levels. Serviceability New gull-wing engine enclosure doors, with pneumatically-assisted lift cylinders, effortlessly lift up for easy access to the 924Gz engine compartment. All service points are grouped in two locations and accessible from ground level. Sight gauges allow easy checking of radiator coolant, hydraulic oil and transmission oil levels. The 924Gz is also equipped with scheduled oil sampling valves for engine, transmission and hydraulic oils. These help facilitate easier, cleaner and better fluid samples. The new cooling system on the 924Gz has a swing-out, hydraulically-driven fan that allows for easy cleaning and servicing of the radiator. Other service benefits include increased engine service intervals (500 hours compared to 250 hours on most competitive machines), self-diagnostic transmission and data link that allow quick, easy troubleshooting by service personnel and adjustment-free brakes and engine fuel system.
